That last bit looks like it could be an issue.

What version of Ubuntu is your friend using?

There was an unsigned module bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1253155), but it
was only fixed (and only recently) in 12.04LTS, 13.10 and 14.04.
Trying the latest version of one of those may help.

Compiling a new kernel could be another option.
