OK, got it working! for future reference, the default IP for the XH8287
is 192.168.1.250. Username/password is admin/admin.

Yes, but I didn't know the IP address (and hence not the subnet), dear
Liza, dear Liza... that was the whole point of the excercise!

I had tried just having my computer and the AP on the network to see
whether I could DHCP me an IP address, and I also tried setting it to
192.168.1.10 and tried 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.254.

I tried nmap on 192.156.1.0/24 too, but didn't get anything.

But your email, plus Cliffp's suggestion to keep nmap'ing, plus
Kingsley's suggestion that the router-inspired route might mean I wasn't
able to ping it while it was trying to route through the router,
prompted me to go back to a manually-configured 192.168.1.10 address and
nmap'ing from there. Lo and behold, the AP turned up!

Thanks to everyone who helped. I now have changed the IP to be on the
same subnet as everything else, reset the SSID, configured WPA, and
changed the password.

BTW, is WPA satisfactory? It seems this device is too old for WPA2...

Interestingly, in my travels, I found this site explaining how to hack
it to install DD-WRT...

http://www.marlwifi.org.nz/projects/xh8287-hack

It is a bit of a hardware hack...

I haven't soldered anything much since I was a kid, and even then I
didn't do a lot, so this is probably a little beyond my skill set at the
moment, but might be an interesting project...
