Here's a newbie longshot. I had trouble with a similar pause while
loading the scsi modules for my scanner. Upon loading the scsi module
would scan for devices (I think) and the whole system would simply stop
(appear to have crashed) for 20s until it had finished. After the pause
the scanner worked and the system worked normally.
Does your firewall script trigger the loading of any kernel modules?</I></FONT></PRE>

networking script. Is this important? Is this the same with your script?

<FONT SIZE="3">No, I've run it at a command line with iptables running & it worked ok. I've also run it & saved the new configuration to the iptables configuration file.<BR>
