Hey Sam,

I'm also spending some time in Wellington (and enjoying it :-)). I've been going to the internet cafe at the end of the cuba mall area. IPlay (www.iplaynz.com). They let you hook up your laptop to the internet, so I've been using it to upload photos and software updates I'm working on.

But, if you haven't found something, I can help - I have a CD writer in my laptop and an external DVD writer if you need more space. My camera goes through space quickly when I actually use it, so that justified taking the DVD writer with me :-).

Hello Wellyluggers,
I'm from the UK, and am spending a few weeks here in Wellington (and enjoying
it very much) while on an extended tour of New Zealand. I have a laptop with
me, running Linux (of course ;-), which I'm using to store photos, my
journal, draft blog posts and the like. I'd like to do a backup of /home,
but I've let the quantity of data outgrow the capacity of my largest CF card
(doh!).
Despite this, I suppose that I could transfer it bit-by-bit at an internet
cafe and get them to burn a CD for me, but I'd have to do this via my digital
camera and it would be a bit of a pain in the butt, so before I resorted to
this I thought I'd post here and ask you guys for some advice.
Specifically, is there is a Linux-friendly place in Welly where I could just
network up the laptop and avoid having to copy bits and pieces between
several different media several times? I have both an ethernet card and a
wireless card which work, although uploading the data via CafeNet will cost a
fair bit in bandwidth charges, as there's around 200megs, IIRC.
I have asked in a couple of places. The bloke in Cybernomad on Courtenay
Place was helpful and said I'd be welcome to try but that I'd have to know
what I was doing - but I'm afraid that I don't really know a great deal about
networking (I'm a hobbyist and not a pro, so my knowledge is more orientated
towards maintaining standalone boxes and connecting to ISPs). Perhaps this
would be easy - I really don't know.
Any advice, rcommendations, or offers of help would be most appreciated!
Have I missed an abvious solution? I may well not be in Wellington for the
date of your next meeting on the 9th of Feb, which I assume might have been
an opportunity (although I might be, it depends on a few things).
In case anyone's interested, the laptop is a little Sony Vaio PCG-C1F running
Slackware 9.
Thanks,
Sam
