I am running a dual-booted WinXP and Debian unstable system.<br>
All devices, including dvd & cdrw operate normally under XP so the
problem<br>
is almost certainly not hardware.<br>

I don't understand the error messages. Mplayer works well with
streaming video & audio <br>
but I can't get it to play DVD's. I think it comes down to understanding<br>
why I can't correctly mount the DVD & CDRW devices. Permissions ?<br>
<br>
I'm not quite sure where to look to enable DMA, or turn it off.<br>

certainly detecting the drive, but it seems to be
choking setting it up.
Can you check the drive by putting in another machine?
Or putting another, known-good, drive on the same
cable?
Also, in the newer 2.4 kernels (probably 2.6 too),
there is a configuration option to enable DMA if
available (somewhere under an IDE ATA option). My
experience is that turning it OFF removed status=0x51
errors on an old laptop.
It's a long-shot, but it shouldn't hurt to check.
