By default compilers are not installed.<br>Using Yast you should install make, c-devel and gcc.<br>If you select any one of those packages the dependency resolution<br>routine should select everything you need to start compiling.
<br>Just remember that the header packages for any library are usually<br>separate to the library.<br>If you want to compile something that requires specific libraries<br>make sure you install the respective -devel package for that library.

It turned out I had disabled my dvd source thinking it would be able to
get the packages from ftp since ftp is working for updates but I
re-enabled the dvd source and now search in Yast2 can find the required
packages. I will have to work out the correct format for adding the
mirror sources.<br>

Well I did compile gnome-ppp but it needed to be run setuid to enable
it to start pppd which being a gtk+ app didn't like but then I realised
I could just install kppp even if I'm running Gnome, so I did and it
works :)<br>
