OK, sorry for the false assumption, I just checked with my Xubuntu install, although I'm currently using Kiwionline for dialup not Paradise. Gnome-ppp worked fine but only with the "ignore terminal strings - stupid mode" box ticked. Gkdial also connected ok but the only indication it was connected was the button changed to "Disconnect" the timer didn't seem to get updated. Did you check the user privilages to make sure both "use serial devices" and "use tools that dial out" are selected.
