<font face="Arial">Well, not entirely true. If you do a fresh install
of your entire system with the (K)Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft install CD
things I hear are heaps smoother. I on the other hand bumbled on
through without carefully reading reports about upgrading from Dapper
first. For me, things did not work as per the instructions on:<br>
<br>
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://kubuntu.org/announcements/6.10-release.php">http://kubuntu.org/announcements/6.10-release.php</a><br>
<br>
I first burnt an iso to CD and tried the apt-cdrom rout which didn't
work at all, so then just upgraded my repositories and tried through
the net which worked kind of. Well, no it didn't. There were heaps of
dependency conflicts and at the end of apt-get dist-upgrade nothing
really had been finished with a suggestion from apt to try apt-get -f
install (no packages specified). I did this and things got installed
and finished. Rebooted and (*whew*) xserver started up no problems and
I could log in as before. I must say the new Kubuntu artwork is pretty
swish. The upgrade left my system with many of the media playing
devices returned to their default settings so spent last evening
getting those right again.<br>
<br>
The Kubuntu upgrade has also left alot of package conflicts, notably
python related which I have to now work my way through.<br>
<br>
Kubuntu Edgy feels a lot smoother though in it's day to day running.
Boot up and shut down more or less goes straight into a graphical
display with one of those progress meter things down the bottom and
nice Kubuntu logo displayed - no linux operations text lines at all,
although I imagine you can press a function key to see those if you
really wanted to. All very nicely integrated.<br>
<br>
My verdict: Great if you get it going like I did but don't upgrade
though unless you are prepared for your system to get hosed and start
afresh. I think I was lucky judging by the comments i read on slashdot
regarding this, true horror stories.<br>
