For the record, last night I purchased a Samsung ML-2010 monochrome laser printer from Dick Smiths ($99 new). It works very nicely with Ubuntu 7.10 and a hand-compiled SpliX-1.1.1 driver w/ CUPS. I have it printing from networked Ubuntu and Windows XP clients.

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Samsung-ML-2010

There is a Ubuntu SpliX package but I didn't use it. Compiling the 1.1.1 driver required locating the jbigkit-1.6 source (which you can disable if you don't want to use it) and modifying the Makefile paths to find the jbig headers and the compiled library.

If anyone is interested I can provide more specific details.

You get 1000 pages for $99, and replacement toner cartridges are currently about $120 (IIRC) for 3000 pages. The printer does *not* come with a USB cable (the square type).

This printer is being used for quick-n-dirty print jobs such as printing receipts/invoices, howto webpages/faqs or anything that needs a hardcopy. It's not going to be used for anything serious like DTP of course.
