If you've managed to get gnome apps installed without the
supporting libraries (if I recall correctly you preferred KDE)
then it's probably the reason for your issue. Otherwise it's
likely your users .gconf or .gconfd file is corrupt.

If your try to find and install the package gconf2 (that's what
it's called in Debian and deriviatives like ubuntu.
