Shoes may well have been it :-) Cut off the circulation to my brain.

I didn't adduser at all. Just entered passwords for root & knoppix as prompted
by the installer.

I found the Knoppix install frustrating, particularly in contrast to the
PCLinuxOS one:

Click on "install to hard drive" (admittedly not the easiest location in the 
     menu tree to find, but the instructions are pretty clear) 
 simple GUI for partitioning, (I think with a default?)
 buzz whirr...
 passwords
 simple network questions
 working...
 

(Maybe I exaggerate a bit, but it was a very pleasant surprise in terms of
simplicity & effectiveness, although it took a while longer than knoppix :-)

Linux doesn't have to be arcane :-)
