One thing any punter recognizes is a map. Maybe not a bash prompt in a terminal
window, but a map is recogniseable :-)

I agree, out target audience is not going to be creating 3D images for TV
weather forecasts (not straight away at least). The fact Linux is used for
systems to do this sort of thing may be relevant, however, & the pictures can
be pretty eye-catching. A picture from Scooby Doo- I seem to recall the special
effects in that movie were all done on Linux?

Linux is a powerful desktop & server OS, capable of letting its users do all
sorts of things they have probably never thought of. Doesn't necessarily mean
we shouldn't think of it either, or ignore it. Make the point that Linux
provides a system that does all the stuff you want both now and in the future,
so you won't outgrow it. No one is saying you have to run huge databases &
models if you use Linux, but is something that it offers if you ever want to.

Any idea how many yachties, boaties, trampers & fishermen around who are using
mapping software & hand held GPS? Prob not many in WLUG, I know, but prob more
of them in Wgtn than there are in WLUG :-)

Which raises the possibility of a Linux GPS presentation- I know DSE are keen
on that area, they are looking for software to bundle with GPS systems they
sell.

Push the idea that Linux is alive & well, absolutely, positively thriving.
Doing lots of neat fun things as well as all the basic stuff. Come & join in if
you want!!

I'll bow to the desires of the majority, however :-)

Aloha!!
