Another suggestion for mailing lists is try to refrain from posting cute 
replies, one liners etc (I know it's difficult ;-).  By all means add them 
onto the bottom of relevant posts to lighten the mood.  Having just waded 
through dozens of posts in this thread I can't help feeling that not all of 
them were contributing much to the discussion!

As far as advertising is concerned I'd agree with no commercial advertising 
but don't have a problem with the occasional personal item, freebie etc 
relevant to Linux Users (ie I want to know if someone's got a spare linux 
compatible modem, or perhaps x-terminal going cheap :-).  If the usergroup 
requirements are different from the mailing-list host then I suggest 
move.  I am quite happy to host a unrestricted mailing list if needed.

An alternative would be to have a separate buy/sell/free mailing list.
