Thanks for the thoughts so far. In answer to some specific questions, yes I
do want to provide some support structure for new users etc. so they don't
just give up and go back to their old habits and yes I do find LANPlace to
be a bit of a problem in that respect primarily for the two reasons I have
outlined, access and background noise. I would still prefer to do this at a
LUG meeting though as that is one of the reasons for having a LUG in the
first place. The LANPlace venue does have some advantages (low cost, power
supplies, screens, datashow, internet access(?) etc.) so if we can fix what
I perceive to be the problem then that would be a Good Thing. Remember
though that it may just be me that sees this as a problem.
The Hutt Lug structure sounds like it is sort of what I was looking at
however we are back to the J'vlle problem... how do people get there?. I
had a similar cunning plan worked out for Karori as well... I have line of
sight from my house to the community centre and thought setting up a
wireless link between the two would be a start but again, would people
trudge out that way for a LUG/clinic meeting? (and they have turned it into
a temporary library as well so it's not available anymore...).
I hadn't thought about getting commercial (DSE,Quay) sponsorship but that
may be another way of doing it. I am the first one to admit that I can't
code for toffee and so have to look at other ways to contribute to the OS
Community and doing it via the LUG was the primary focus but, if a
commercial operator wants to fund the environment then us providing time on
a regular basis might not be a bad idea. I believe that this has been
discussed on the NZOSS group before under a slightly different guise so I
guess revisiting that would be useful as well.
So, all still a bit waffly at this point but with potential. I have also
committed the cardinal sin of being critical of something without providing
a viable alternative, which is not a good look. What I will do to rectify
that is hunt around for possible venues for the LUG and/or clinic and then
present them for discussion.
