Was this not discussed awhile ago, and no one wanted to host it.. and we
all agreed that Ewan (Thanks Ewan) and Naos (Thanks Guys) were doing a
good job with the service anyway.....

Perhaps David or Mark would like to host it on their connections...

Mark, I am sure you employer would love to host such a service.. ay...
(We all know where you work, you don't need to tell us, and the reasons
why they wont be able to host it)

What about your home account David?... whats your data cap like.. I have
noticed that Cable is having issues lately - and lets not go on about
ADSL outages...

Remember its a "low noise" list - but each email is sent 500+ times - 1
for each subscriber.......................... that can increase traffic
quite a bit I am sure...

Lets all just be thankful that its being hosted at all - lets respect
the wishes of the person who is putting the time and effort into
providing us a brilliant service and move on with life.

My post was simply to point out that, we have rules, but we have no
structure to deal with the rules.

Jethro your rule outline was good..

Ian you say that "it does piss me off a wee bit that I am
subscribed to 3 lists for the WellyLUG."

You are not on 3 lists for WellyLUG ..

You are one one list for WellLUG and that would be the "main" list or
the Linux orientated list..

You are on another for the Org group
and another for the buy/sell/exchange..

No one is being forced to join to each group, they are all optional, in
fact, I stayed on the main list, because of the no advertising
rule...... I don't want to get all that - I would prefer to help people
with a Linux issue, or meet up for a BBQ or something else..

I stay on the ORG list, because I would like to hear what events are
being organised, like the Installfest and Software Freedom day....

I stay away from the Buy/Sell/Exchange list, because I have enough crap
at home, and I really don't want anymore, and might be tempted.....

Anyway, (this is not a point the finger)...

The person who posted the stuff has been on the list long enough to know
about the other lists.. he cant say he has never heard of these lists
before, they have been discussed many times, both on the main list, and
the org list, and he is on both of them.....

David and Mark, you are both new to the list and the WellyLUG... if you
had done it, I would have not gone off the handle and waited for a list
admin or something to quietly point out to you that it's unacceptable do
do that on this list..

All you two need to do is go through the list archive and see that...
indeed your arguments have been pointed out many times, and it has not
changed the nature of the group, so you are, to coin a phrase, pissing
in the wind.

The LUG is open to change, the one rule that has remained in the time
that I have been a subscriber / attender is no advertising on the
list......

Many times (3 (in my time) if I recall although I might be wrong) it has
been suggested that the "No Advertising rule" is a bad
idea.................................
it was discussed that we move the list to another
server..............................

You know the funny thing about each time it has been
discussed...................

It's always be new members trying to mould the group into what they
want.. how they would like it to be run...

People come, people go, the LUG has changed in my time ... Presentations
have started, when I first turned up, it was people sitting in a room
just talking, but now we have people coming in who use and develop
software for linux, people who find out "How cool this application is"
and want to show it off....

I was one of those people who came in, and said... why are you not doing
X Y Z, I (inadvertently) was one of the "New People" wanting to change
it to suit my views.... but I respected the rules as they stood - I did
not attempt to change them because I didn't like them..

I started when the first round of "Incorporation" discussion started
(Actually I doubt it was the first time around) - there was turmoil -
there was heated debate on the list.

There was no ORG list to keep non-linux talk away from the people who
just wanted to talk linux, and didn't care about things like
Installfests and Software Freedom Day or would someone like to talk
about this at the next meeting.....

That was a new addition. (SHOCK !!! CHANGE!)

So there has been change....

The no advertising has been discussed and (we thought) understood by
everyone... new people excluded, for obvious reasons, but for new people
to pipe in and say, that's not how it should be run, is just plan wrong
and rude........

The archives of the main list, clearly indicate what the list, and it
has been the list, by nature of the fact that no one has actually wanted
to actively pay for and host the mail list, considers advertising.......

I don't care what a dictionary is... I used to work for Sales in TVNZ...
I know what advertising is in a legal term........

The people in this community have said (again by nature of not actively
moving the list) .... No advertising means, free hardware, shop here
or there, I got this widget from this widget store, and it was less than
that widget store....................

Please don't come on to the list, and try to re-define what has been
decided, long before you or even I joined this list......

Its how the community want it........................ (because no move
has been made to move the list)

Lets leave the community to how they want, and lets leave our own views
aside.

If you want to have one list with advertising, please, by all means go
and start WellLUG2.0.......... as we have said all along..

If you are not willing to actually go through with that.....

STFU!

Thanks...
