'spam' and all things which provide for any sort of unsolicited
advertising. However as cited in my below email, I believe NZLUG have
struck a fairly efficient moderate position; A low volume of messages
focussed specifically on the benefit to the LUG, can be considered
acceptable.

Not suggesting 'advertising' be condoned in any way, except that:

- Drawing attention to new Linux-related technologies (even those that're
'for sale' may be both of interest to LUG'rs, but also promote discussion
on both their pros and cons (the output of which is likely to be of
benefit). I approach this as more of a 'discussion option' than
'advertising' and specifically dislike advertising for advertisings sake.

- Linux specific jobs tend to be few and far between; I would be
supportive of efforts to support our community (i.e. the LUG members) if
they may benefit by the odd sits-Vacant. I exclude recruiters and
recruiting agencies from being permitted for the reason that I would not
support ads from them specifically (as their focus may well not be the
interests of the community at last).

I'm NOT in favour of changing the focus of the list - it should remain
technically focussed and otherwise free of junk - but consider that
NZLUG's policy has specific allowances and that with these, the actual
volume would be somewhere in the vicinity of 3-6 posts _per year_... I
don't feel there's a big risk to, or detraction from, WellyLUG's purpose.

Ewen you have been a friend for years and I don't want you to feel
unduly pressured; but my personal view is that the current position is
inflexible, and I do think that my viewpoint has some merit. I am
interested to hear what others think and hopeful that a compromise may be
considered.

I'd be dissapointed if the only way to move forward would be
to change hosts, as this is a not-insubstantial effort and the LUG has
been extremely lucky to have your support over the years, and on a
continuing basis.

Cheers
Mark.

I will welcome it being raised there.
However I should be clear, i'm talking about Linux-specific Job
Advertisements, with a minimum of commercial focus. The wider issue of
advertising is of course, most definately a slippery slope and i'm the
last to encourage it.[1]

I encourage those interested, to subscribe to wlug_org and be involved in
any discussion.

Mark.
