Hello and welcome to the Wellylug mailing list - the official mailing
list of the Wellington Linux Users Group.
I thought that I should welcome everyone to the list and explain my
ideas for it, and in some cases my ideas for the group itself.
Initially it is intended as a low to medium traffic list with posts
about topics to discuss at meetings, questions about problems that
people might be having, interesting tips & tricks that people have
learnt etc.
Perhaps to kick things off everybody could do a brief introduction of
themselves, telling us a little about their background, computers and
operating systems that they have used, their experience with Linux
(if any), what they hope to get out of the group and ways in which
they think they might be able to help the group. I will start by
posting a brief intro about myself below.
Hi, I'm Jamie and I've been using Linux on and off for about 12-18
months now. I started using it because I hated Windows 95/98 crashing
on me all the time and wanted to find something a bit more stable and
from reading various things I came to the conclusion that Linux was
the way to go. I've been using Linux exclusively for about a month
now (ie. haven't booted into Windows at all!) and I'm loving it.
My history in computers began at the tender age of eleven when I saw
my first PC at the house of family friends - from that initial
sighting and helping the friends children type in and check listing
from computer mags - I was hooked. Now a number of years later (a
number fast approaching 20!) I am still as hooked as ever and have a
passion for computers, both for work and for play. Computers I have
used include ZX81, Spectrum, Dick Smith System 80 (A TRS80 clone for
those who remember them!), Vic20, C-64, BBC Micro, Apple 2/2E, the
original IBM PC models, Mac's and many many models of 'PC' ; this
means that I have used a wide variety of Operating Systems also but I
feel most comfortable with Windows, DOS and Linux (although I cannot
profess to be an expert in these, I do know more than enough to get
me by).
I hope that the group will be able to be a nice, friendly environment
for people who want to learn about Linux and get the most out of
their systems can get together exchange information and ideas and
generally have a good time. I also see the group as bringing Linux to
those who don't have it by having Installfests where people can bring
their hardware along and have a copy of Linux installed and then get
some help configuring things such as X-Windows.
Initially these installfests will be RedHat and Mandrake based as
that is the 'version' of Linux that I am most familiar with - but
hopefully there will be other in the group who, like myself have been
experimenting with Linux for a while and have their own preferred
distribution. I will help the group by providing time, passion and
commitment to it. I will also burn CDs of RedHat, Mandrake and other
distro's for group members for a small fee to cover the CD and time,
the proceeds from which will go to the club.
Well thats a bit of an intro to the group and to myself. I'd like to
take this chance to thank people for joining this list and I hope
that we'll see some more introductions and exchanges of information
soon. I also look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our
first meeting at the Johnsonville Community Centre, at 7:30pm on
Monday 12 June - more details and maps can be found on the website at

Cheers
Jamie
