Thanks for the advice. I like the approach. I will work on it.

Hi Lindsay,

I'm guessing you mean Redhat 6.2 ?? 7.1 was only just released recently.
Sounds like a lot of people on this list are using Mandrake.

At work I am running 3 Redhat machines (now all redhat 7.0, but initially
a couple of 6.2 machines).
At home, redhat 7.091 beta.

Part of my reason for sticking with Redhat is that they are by far the
biggest distro, get their updates / patches out very quickly, have a huge
percentage of the kernel development team in their employment, and things
generally work as I want them to.

I think you will find that nearly every linux distro will do the things
that you are after, and from what I have seen (but not really
experienced), Mandrake may be the easiest for starting out with... It
seems to have a lot of nice GUI tools.
The proxying and firewalling can be done with ipchains / iptables, and the
file sharing with nfs / samba / ftpd / httpd depending on your preference.

Personally though, I would advise you _against_ learning to do anything
through a GUI if you can help it. Not only have I seen many GUI apps make
a mess of configuration files (linuxconf is a great example), I have been
in plenty of situations where I have had to configure machines without any
hope for a GUI whatsoever (i.e. no X installed etc.).
If i hadn't learnt to configure the particular apps through the console, I
would have been screwed.

Seems like people have a different preference depending on what they are
interested in also. I'm mainly interested in network related stuff.
I've heard that programmers tend to like Debian (can someone tell me
why?).

Hope something in that lot helps!
cheers,

-jonny
