[wellylug] The next meeting

It would seem that we are close to our next meeting Monday 8 May?
We have spoken of
(Practical) Networking
File System
Samba
C coding
Mail Server and Internet (server?)
Security
I suggest we wear name tags so we can ID each other a little quicker. I will
bring some cabling and a four port hub. We seemed to have enough last time
but more could show up this time given it seemed to work. Multiplugs will
become important this time I expect.
We will need the white board marker so we can list the IPs and domain early
to get up and going?
I guess networking is to do with installing and trouble shooting a NIC and
the configuration for TCPIP on the LAN and into the Inet? IP addresses on
the LAN and IP on the Net?
Samba is about installing and configuring SAMBA so that it can file share
with a Windoze PC? Colin expects to have his Win98 box plugged in.
C coding is self explanatory. Recommended reading perhaps. K & R on hand?
C++?
Server for mail and stuff. Assuming you have a running Linux box straight
out of Mandrake, which do you do first, the Inet so you can pull down the
software off the net, or should all you need be on the Mandrake CD?
Security is always good practice.
How will we schedule this? I guess I depend on the more experienced to plan
how we might do at least some of these things, and in the order you might
implement them in the world we live in?

The number of nominated subjects may mean that we should prioritise them, in
terms of interdependence. What do you need running before App N? I don't
know, other than I have thought that I would need Samba running, which means
understanding both Linux filing and SMB so I can support a move to a Linux
proxy, supporting itself, and Windows?
Physical networking is straight forward. Moving above that layer is less
familiar. And I have never attempted fibre or Token Ring.
