You've got to be joking, right? I have some issues with /. It's often
biased, and I've heard there's a lot of BS on there. "Sound convincing" !=
"correct".

The mp3 format isn't bad, it's just a few years old. In those years,
research has continued, and therefore you might find a better format
now, but there isn't an alround better one. At least mp3 is universal,
can't say that (yet? ever?) about ogg.

As for encoders, yes they vary in quality, speed, source-availability,
and price. That has nothing to do with the mp3 format though. If your
"fraunhofer codec" refers to their encoder, saying "it's not particularly
good" is pretty irrelevant, esp when you don't say precisely what feature
that "good" is referring to (e.g. compression speed, compression ratio,
loss level, loss level wrt "is that particular loss audible to the human
ear" etc.). If your "fraunhofer codec" refers to the mp3 format, you're
wrong. And /. is talking BS, which is nothing new.
