Definitely an issue for those of us relying on public transport. J'ville
is handy to the station, although catching a bus into town then a train
out again kills quite a bit of time (I'm in Northland). But it's doable.

The room at WCC that LAW was using was quite good as far as I was
concerned - easy to get to, being central city, it's what all the public
transport is targetted at. And AFAIK it was free, and people were
certainly able to get in before Spiro (the organiser) got there, so
organisers being absent shouldn't matter. About the only problem was
figuring out how the light switches worked :-)
In terms of keeping it cheap - I'm never sure how important that is.
This group (and LAW) are very informally run, and I think that may be
one of the reasons why LAW is almost dead (the mailing list has
occasional bursts of life, but it doesn't meet), and this LUG is
drifting. Nobody other than Jamie (apologies if I'm wrong here) has made
any financial or organisational commitment to it.
All the longstanding and successful groups I've been involved with have
had elections, committees, subscriptions etc.
I'd offer to stand for a committee, but I've been on the one for
Victoria University's new Computer Club for about a year and a half (ie
all its life), and we're still struggling, so I'm not sure I'm qualified
:-)
However, I'd probably wear anything up to a $25ish annual subscription -
and I'd probably turn up more often if I did.
But it would have to be more accessible, too.
My thoughts,
Richard
