[wellylug] Lightweight Linux install

I agree in principle.

I think we need to consider how to approach this - perhaps on the model that
Linus Torvalds did - break the distro down to discrete parts and have
participative groups working to ensure the most effective product is
selected each time.

If I read the original post about the distro being considered the person (I
forget who) has not enough time to do all the work. Surely a case of time to
farm some considerations out to the larger community.

This is where WellylUG can participate actively - perhaps consider
'ownership' of some components and research the best/fastest on
CPU/supported/well-featured products in each component area.

This should not take place now - better to work through the current issues
and get a demonstration together first. Later perhaps adopt this approach
for the ongoing development of this area of community support.

My 0.02 worth
Colin

A few more cents worth... Hopefully to spark some debate leading to an
agreed
way from here. (BTW, is there an online archive of this list anywhere?)

Perhaps open a new thread on the discussion board for this?

Anyway...

Given the politics involved in getting Linux into schools, with the approval
of
Ministry of Education, I believe there are a few issues to discuss &
resolve.

I think it likely that MinEd would prefer to endorse a single setup, rather
than several, potentially confusing distributions/versions. This is
different
from the more normal open source situation where there tends to be
discussion
and (generally welcome, sometimes acrimonious) diversity.

I don't have any real axe to grind over which distro is better, but if we
are
going to be useful to the Linux on computers in schools campaign, then as a
group we need to agree on a single way forward, both within WLUG &
nationally
with other interested parties.

To this end I suggest we work with the developers of the NZ distro, unless
there are some shortcomings we can't support or get fixed. Hopefully a
non-issue. I believe we need to cooperate rather than compete where possible
in
this sort of undertaking.

Perhaps the most useful task will ba a compilation of applications/games
suitable for use in this situation. Possibly repackaged to provide a simple
install with the agreed distro.

Spotcha!
