Well I have finally been forced into the unfortunate experience of
Installing Windows XP onto a customers computer. The machine is a
Athlon XP1800+ with 1204MB DDR PC2700 ram, on an Epox 8K3A+ mobo with
built in Highpoint Raid, 2x80Gb WD special edition (8Mb cache)hdd setup
as hardware mirror Raid, LG CDwriter, GF4 MX440 video card, 350Watt Dual
Fan PSU, and loads of Thermaltake cooling.
I first installed Redhat 7.3, (KDE3.0 is AWESOME), and played with that
for a week. Once I got passed setting up the RAID controller, and
replaced the PSU, which was causing stability problems, I got it
installed easily, and it was rock solid. Played Unreal Tournament at
1600x1200x32bit and it was really smooth. Fantastic system, I didn't
get sound going, but I never really tried, though there was a fix for it
on the net, I just never got that far.
I installed WindowsXP lastnight at the request of my customer, and I was
shocked at how bad the installer was. Took about 3 hours to install,
the installer crashed once and I had to start again, and after finally
getting the thing up and running the CDwriter wouldn't read any of the
driver cd's. I have had to mount the cd's in my Linux box and install
the drivers over my samba connection. There is nothing wrong with the
drive, windows just keeps complaining about incorrect registry entries
and missing dlls, and thats after a clean install It is soooooooooooo
slow, espaecially compared to KDE with everything turned on under Redhat
7.3. Did I mention it is UGLY, yuk, it's near impossible to find
things, even for those familiar with 98 ME 2000Pro, I can't believe it
is Micrsofts Flagship product. I did read the liscensing agreement and
found that the DRM that is threatening to become the next plague of the
internet is already partialy implemented in XP, and you are limited to
connecting to 10 other devices eg Printers, other Computers etc. so
once you have a couple of computers with a couple of devices each you
break the EULA agreement. Any way thats enough about this bloatware, I
better get on to the net and find info on how to fix the problems I am
having with it.
