Ah, now we're at the real question. In my experience, recompiling for
686 is not worth the bother, but for those who want the extra 1.83%
speed (and those apps which may benefit from it by a higher percentage,
but OO doesn't seem a likely candidate), put this into your ~/.rpmrc:

# ~/.rpmrc
# When building for PII/PIII
#
buildarchtranslate: i686: i686

I have ~/.rpmrc.XX and symlink the appropriate one to ~/.rpmrc with a
script which also conveniently logs the whole thing and runs rpm, it
takes the arguments of CPU type and spec file (it's for making rpms, no
--rebuild, but hey). You can have a copy if you like.

This will rebuild OO for a different CPU. For the issue of which
freetype to use, I don't know but a look at the spec file in the
.src.rpm should give valuable insights. Modify spec file, run rpm -ba
specfile.
