Some comments (just my opinion):

>From a schools/kids perspective, a it needs a lightweight draw/paint before
throwing GIMP at a novice user. MS Paint rather than Corel Draw.

This might apply to some other packages as well, like a simple text editor with
a nice GUI, (Notepad equivalent) as well as a Word equivalent.

Other software packages I know kids love are Publisher/Powerpoint. There is
someting very satisfying about creating a page & printing it, or a presentation
& showing it to friends & family. Gives them a real buzz which is about the
best thing you can do to get a real interest in using a computer kick started.
(help a kid of any age to write a script which asks for their name, then echo's
"HI <name>!" if you want to see a grin of delight)

Which games & educational software? This area can be the key to get someone
completely new to computers actually enjoying their exposure to a pretty
intimidating experience. As was mentioned, Kids Pix, Dangerous Creatures,
Dinosaurs are incredibly popular with kids learning about PC's. I don't know of
any Linux equivalents, prob coz Linux has never been pushed as a newbie OS,
more as a server or something you move up to from Windows (sorry Bill!).

Without actually trying it, I'd say it looks like a well thought out
implementation, very well done to get the performance/functionality on this
sort of platform with a pretty up to date kernel & suite.

Nuff for now, just my $0.04.
