Not at my Linux desktop right now, but for a fact it can import mbox files.

Yes. Very sure. So sure that I have my private Bayesian spam filter project
pointing directly at my Evolution-managed mbox files, using both Perl and Python
mbox modules. No problems.
What Evolution does is keep its own index files containing pointers into the
mbox files.
You can also use maildir if you prefer. (And that other format whose name I
can't remember right now).

Who knows? I'd never heard of mutt until a friend introduced me a couple of

Indeed. But there's no harm in looking for the least sucky.
Incidentally, BBEdit used to have the slogan "It doesn't suck" - and for me at
least, it didn't. BBEdit is the Emacs of the MacOS, ie God's Own Text Editor.
But that was on another host, and besides the process is dead.
