I assume you can browse the Internet anyway?

A checklist:
Check that any firewalls that may have been installed are stopped
Check you hosts files for anything that should not be there
Disable proxy settings

Thats a start.

Subject: [wellylug] Mandrake 9 - Mandrake Update

I am currently using a MDK 9 machine with a PII processor, 96M Ram,
4gig HDD with an old Rockwell 56k modem (which I know has sucessfully
worked with MDK 8.2 (yes, I know my machine is ancient but it's being
updated soon) :))

When I try to update using Mandrake Update, it will not allow me to
verify any mirrors. I have manually entered
ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com.au/pub/Mandrake/updates/9.0/RPMS as the
closest mirror, yet Mandrake is unable to verify it and states that
there seems to be a problem with the network/proxy.

I am able to connect to the internet, yet unable to ping any
webserver to check that the TCP/IP module is working correctly, and
have taken off all proxy settings on web browsers and the Mandrake
Control Centre.

Can anyone offer some advice as to what I should do next?
