[wellylug] home network / Host unreachable

Hi Edouard

My guess would be that the hardware is not set up correctly.

Is your TP cable a cross-over cable or going through a hub/switch? The light
on the NIC should come on when the cable is plugged in.

Is the appropriate driver being loaded for the network card and any nessary
parameters.
on slackware with an SMC ISA NIC I see:

root at louis:~# grep smc /etc/rc.d/rc.modules
/sbin/modprobe smc-ultra

root at louis:~# ifconfig

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:DF:09:D7:0A
          inet addr:192.168.0.100 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:1403512 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:1204554 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:5 Base address:0x6200

Is your hosts file correct ?

root at louis:~ # cat /etc/hosts
#
# hosts This file describes a number of hostname-to-address
# mappings for the TCP/IP subsystem. It is mostly
# used at boot time, when no name servers are running.
# On small systems, this file can be used instead of a
# "named" name server. Just add the names, addresses
# and any aliases to this file...
#

# For loopbacking.
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.100 louis
#
# others
#
# End of hosts.

good luck, Chris

Subject: [wellylug] home network / Host unreachable

Hi
Thanks all for your replies regarding hardware and Mandrake.

One question related to networking under RH:

got 2 Pc here (one is RH7.0 and the other RH7.1), a D-link De 816 TP in
between.
Eth cards work Ok.
Pc1 has RH7.0 and the IP : 192.168.1.1 Nicknamed gascogne
Pc2 has Rh7.1 and the IP : 192.168.1.2 Nicknamed wairarapa

My trouble is that Pc1 and Pc2 do not talk to each other (host unreachable
by
ping) in both directions.
Pc2 can not reach the external world trough Pc1 whilst conected to Paradise.

Pc1 has IPchaining (in /etc/ppp/ip-up.local) and is connecting to Paradise.
It seems to work fine as reported by ipchains -L input, output or forward...
Netcfg seems to be properly setup on both Pcs (following examples).
On Pc1 DNS is OK (again following examples), conversely, on Pc2 :

[root at wairarapa] host -a wairarapa
gives me a time out can not reach server and this despite a config cc to the
one
on Pc1 (named, resolv etc...) with names and ips changed accordingly.

Doing named or network restart does not change anything.
I have not done anything on bindconf though....
I do suspect that troubles are coming from Pc2 but have no idea what to do
next.

Any ideas on this matter (please) ?

Cheers
Edouard
