I don't mind so much if an application takes a minute to load so long as it's 
responsive while I'm using it. In my experience Mozilla is sluggish 
throughout. OpenOffice is acceptable once loaded.

What software is still available for Windows 3.11? Is it a dead-end? (we 
could use BeOS if dead-ends don't matter and we want that kind of speed)


- Desktop
KDE vs. Gnome vs. ROX. Perhaps I have a strange ratio of computer parts, but 
Gnome has always been faster for me. I haven't tried KDE 3, or Gnome 2, but I 
assume they're slower than previous versions. Is this correct?
I'd give ROX some thought <http://rox.sourceforge.net>. I occasionally use it 
on a P233MMX and it's performed very well. It has a clean interface.


- Office (WPP, Spreadsheet, Database)
OpenOffice is the obvious choice. It's a pig to start but fast enough once 
loaded. There are mature proprietary packages such as Gobe Productive (not 
yet out on Linux)

Hancom Office (I tried the Windows version and it was able to open all but a 
few of my poorly formatted spreadsheets).
 - Word Processor
It would be Abiword if it supported tables. I can't think of anything else 
(I've had problems with KWord 1.1.1 reading most Office files).
 - Spreadsheet
Gnumeric is fast (once loaded).
 -  Database
There are GUIs for MySQL/Postgres. Is this the right way to go?
If so I use MyCC and haven't had a problem.


- Browser
The non-Mozilla browsers on Linux tend to be not very good in dealing with 
_every_ page, though the exception is Konquerer. I think Galeon or Skipstone 
would be good here. I use Opera at home but it doesn't cope well with buggy 
sites. Maybe that's an acceptable tradeoff.


- Drawing (bitmap)
No idea. Gimp?


- Email
I've used Mahogany (POP3/IMAP/-Newsreader) with no complaints.
