Hi

I make use of a shared laptop at work, a coworker recently installed XP on it over the previous 98 install - this broke my lilo - now i can only boot from a floppy.

Im using mandrake 8.2 on this laptop so i checked out the mandrake forums:

http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=2203&lang=en

I tried the ways suggested to get mandrake to rewrite lilo to the mbr - ie:

1."use the boot floppy to boot into your Mandrake Linux system. Start up the Mandrake Control Center, choose 'Boot' and then 'Boot Config' and reinstall the boot loader."

2." boot the CD, press escape and type "rescue" at the LILO prompt. After a while you get a menu where you can choose to reinstall the LILO of the installed mandrake system."

unfortunately neither of these worked - it still only starts windows - no lilo, the windows version is XP professional - has anyone had success rewriting lilo with this version of windows??

There is a third option:
"Even better solution. Use ntloader (win2k/xp boot loader) to load linux!

How? Export your linux boot sector to a file and save it in your "c:" partition.

dd if=/dev/hdx of=/win/linux.lnx size=512 count=1

now edit lilo.conf and tell it to save the boot sector to /win/linux.lnx

run lilo
edit the c:oot.ini (in dos or windows, if you do it in linux it wont work because of the way linux handles text files)
Now make an entry for linux
c:linux.lnx="Linux"
"
but Id prefer to get lilo to work.

any comments?
