[wellylug] Broken LILO due to XP

Another suggestion.

I am using SuSE, and the install disks allow me to specify booting the
existing system after a few screens. Then you can make any changes to
lilo.conf needed, and run lilo. To do this, use the install disks, but
without having the CD/DVD in the drive.

The CD or DVD is bootable too, and I believe it allows the same pathway
after a few screens. Other distributions may have the same feature in
their install disks.

If not, start your install set, but check if any other terminals are
created and offer a prompt. Just switch to that terminal, see if mount
and lilo are available, and mount the partitions that have /boot and
/etc (for lilo.conf), and run lilo. I do not now if lilo has any
trouble with XP, I know the recent versions handle W2k fine.

And I recommend you make a rescue disk set for the future. That's an
option in SuSE, presumably in other distros, and there are rescue disk
sets available generally on the web if not in your distribution.

Given the laptop is shared, and my be tampered with by other people,
does it make more sense to put Linux in your XP boot menu? I'm avoiding
XP, so I can't give you much advice, but I know NT and W2k will do this.
