An interesting read - thanks.

The article (http://www.distrowatch.com/article-rpm.php) had a paragraph 
titled 'The next great flight - from Mandrake to Gentoo' - it seems many 
people are in the same boat as me.

If Mandrake did release a 'compile from source' type release, I'd 
definately be keen to give it a go..  Until then though..
