[wellylug] Coyote and 3Com 509 cards

I need some expereince here. Compaq 486/66 Prolinea, installed two
identical (?) 3Com509B NICs with a view to installing CoyoteLinux LRP.

Clash on boot one. Cards are PNP, identical so are using the same address
space and IRQ. So disable card two PnP (using the alpha priority described
in Linux docs somewhere) and manually changing the 10/300 to 7/340 but to no
avail. Coyote FAQ says

"Q: I’m having problems with the 3com 509 [series] NICs.

A: As mentioned in the documentation, the 509’s aren’t to have their IRQ and
I/O set manually – leave it to the probe to detect the settings.

If you really find there’s problems, try using the DOS-level program called
3C5X9CFG.EXE (228K) to set the card's IRQ and memory range. There’s also
this MS batch file (4K) to disable Plug and Play."

Reponse of Linux is "unknown interface." When in standard config, only one
card would install. Turn off the 'second' card PNP and change the IRQ and
address. No change. Turn both off, configured as 10/300 and 7/340 and all
unknown. What's my problem? Can the order of the cards be significant
here? This must be a familiar problem to someone? :-)
