Paul,

Mandrake's GUI's also support GRUB.  Use drankconf to change to GRUB if
you like.  It will do the donkey work for you.  Then if you need to
configure anything (I'm surprised it is not automatically detecting
knoppix), use David's example to point you in the right direction.
