[wellylug] Mandrake 9.0 unable to write to floppy

Trying tar czvf /dev/fd0 /etc gives:

tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
tar (child): /dev/fd0: Cannot open: Read-only file system
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
Broken pipe

but doing a tar czvf /dev/floppy/0 /etc doesn't give those errors :/

Does that help at all?

I have to admit that I'm rather confused over it all myself.

my fstab line:
/dev/fd0     /floppy     auto    defaults,user,noauto   0 0

my device file:
brw-rw----    1 root     floppy     2,   0 Jan 27  2002 /dev/fd0

(That's on Debian)

But it works (for root, anyway) even if I remove the 'w's.

Can you write to it when it's not mounted? Eg with
tar czvf /dev/fd0 /etc
(or with /dev/floppy/0)

That might narrow it down a bit - whether it's something with the
driver, or how it's mounted.
