Rumours. Make sure you see one before you believe. Last time I checked
(a while ago) none were available / telepermitted in NZ. I have yet to
find someone who can positively confirm having seen one, let alone own
one. Speak up if that fits you.

If you want a hardmodem, your choice is between internal ISA and
external. With a little soldering it should be possible to power an
external modem from the computer, getting rid of an annoying plug pack.

Astonishingly, losemodems(TM) (lucent and connexant) seem to keep
working with each kernel upgrade. In what way doi these perform not as
well?
