That probably means it worked - the X cursor by default is an "x" - and
the command you ran "XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new" or
similar tests the X server.
You can kill a running X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, so, perhaps
give it a go again, and then if you get a cursor, and little else, but
you get something on screen - it probably worked.
So copy the file from /root to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and type "startx"
at a console and see what happens :)
