It's not plain text over the wire, because it's http-over-ssl.  It is
plain text in the argument list, so you shouldn't use it on shared boxes
if you don't want to give your password away, or if you don't trust the
other users.

I looked for a client that would prompt, and be readily available;
lynx won't prompt, wget (on my system, anyway) won't handle https,
and lwp-request won't either.  Suckie.
