Just finished installs of Mandrake 9.1 on two machines, with no major
problems. GUI booted okay - I think the trick with the install is no do a
minimal install with only bare necessities, and then add the rest later -
there are to many things that can go wrong if you get to ambitious at the
install stage - Package Manager etc are good friendly tools for installing
new software - but it annoys me that they have seperated out the install
and remove software into two seperate utilities... I liked i think it was
Mdk 8 where you could do both - and check what you have installed (you can
use kpackage for that now tho - with a few fiddles)
One of the machines I installed Mdk on was a broken Redhat 8 DVD install
(done by Quay computers - badly, twice) - the modem driver was broken, the
AC'97 soundcard wouldn't work with the RH module, and even the 8139too
ethernet module wouldn't always function. It wouldn't boot into GUI, and
couldn't even autologin. Had a few random freezes when booting and alsorts
of quirks... I spent about 3 days trying a variety of things to fix it,
and in the end upgraded to MDK 9.1, never looked back... ethernet, sound
all work.
Just a few quirks with the and the modem (intel HaM 536EP with intels
binary only drivers) - if anyones been there, done that let me know. The
module loads okay, just can't seem to get MDK to recognise the modem.
