Put the PC out in the Garage, run a high-speed network connection to one (or
more) diskless box inside the house, use VNC to connect.
Noise problem transferred to external environment, which is quite cold
anyway this time of year, so cooling requirement minimised.
Problem resolved! :-)

FYI,
I just replaced the power supply in my computer. Previously I had the
default 320W PS that came with the iCute case, this dual fan PS was
extremely noisy (I actually opened it up to stop one of the fans, and it was
still very noisy).
The new PS is a Thermaltake Silent Purepower 300W and it is a marked
difference, it is only the sound of a whisper of breath rather than a
tornado. I would definately recommend this to anyone who wants to quieten
their system.
Of course my problem now is that the CPU fan bothers me!
