[wellylug] apt configuration on clean install.

I've just (sort of) finished a clean install of Debian.
I got right up to the part where it runs tasksel and then dselect, and
that was about the point where my flatmate really needed his CD-rom back
(I only have a SCSI cd-rom which my motherboard will not boot from), so
I aborted running tasksel and dselect and powered the PC down. when I
booted back up, I configured my /etc/apt/sources.list with the paradise
sources, and did a "apt-get update", and it worked fine, except it
doesn't seem to be updating dpkg's available database. It doesn't come
up with the usual updating database messages after the apt-get update
and the only packages listed inside dselect are the ones I have
installed. apt seems to be downloading the latest package listings
fine.
Is there some sort of dpkg update database command that usually gets run
automatically or something that isn't being done on my system? if so can
someone tell me the command I'm looking for, or am I missing a
configuration somewhere perhaps.
Any help is appreciated.
Cameron
