The libusb project http://libusb.sourceforge.net/ is trying to provide a 
comprehesive solution for this. Support to date is adhoc only.

Sun have identified this as a problem and have committed resources 
towards getting this fixed properly for usb/usb2 (with all code going 
back into GPL). If you don't have any luck there will be a solution 
coming just around the corner.
