Thanks Rob and Chris for your info.  I actually purchased a USB 2.0
model from Quay (a PQI model) with the proviso that I could take it back
if it doesn't work.  Well it works just fine.  Simply plug it in, and a
little icon pops up on the gnome desktop pointing to the mounted
partition.  Good so far.  Probably better than with Windoze.

However, the speed issue is the real question.  It takes about 10 secs
to download a 1.4 MB image via USB 1.1, and about half that with USB
2.0.  I was hoping it would be faster, because if you download 100
images from the camera, it does take ages!  I don't know if I'll stick
with it given it only halves the speed and I could think of better
things to spend $85 on :-)

Now, if only the instructions would indicate if it is unsafe to remove
the flash memory with the device still plugged in....
