that is a linux firewire problem,
i got the same with a different firewire case,
and i heared it from others too.
at least in my case it is only freezing the programs trying to access
the disk, not the whole machine, like usb did occaionally.

think you need to add this line in /etc/modules.conf (note that in
debian this file is generated and may be overwritten)
options sbp2 sbp2_serialize_io=1
