Thanks Martin for this - I was wondering if it was a hardware problem. 
Do you know if the 2.6 kernel will have better luck?  I'm wondering if
the new scheduler will be able to handle problems like this better.

Here, sometimes the mouse can be moved for a while, then it too freezes
for half a minute or so... far from ideal, but better than a total lock
up, for sure.
