Hi everyone,
I am new to Linux, and not technically minded beyond novice level. I
have tried to install Mandrake 9.0 from CDs which a friend burnt. It
was hopeless and stalled at all different stages, so I eventually gave
up.
A friend then installed Suse 7.1 which I am using now to a limited
degree. However it does install, so clearly Linux can run on my
computer.
Last week I bought Red Hat 8.0 for Dummies along with two CDs. The
insatll attempts went well except I didn't understand the bootloader
instructions very well, and when I tried to reboot after each install
the X graphical interface didn't display.
The first time I received the following message:
"Cannot open display: :1
File "/usr/bin/anaconda", line 535, in ? from splash screen import
splashScreenShow
File "/usr/lib/anaconda/splashscreen.py", line 20, in ? import gtk
File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-package/gtk/--init--.py", line 19 in ?
from_gtk import*
Runtime error could not open display.
Install esited abnormally
And so on until safely reboot system.
I tested the media and both disks passed.
Reinstalled and got this message after an apparently sucessful install
"Graphical interface not set up correctly."
The third time "X test - cannot open display: :9
The install correctly identifies my monitor as HP Ultra VGA 1024, and
video card asS3 Trio 64v2.
I tried various settings but the test display, which is meant to show
"Can you see this message?" doesn't work.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks Rose
