Hi everyone
Can anyone help with setting up print services for Windows computers via
Samba on Debian, to HP JetDirect printers. I'm working with a colleague
to set up a Samba server for Windows file and print services for a small
branch office.
We've tried both magicfilter and apsfilter without much success.
Magicfilter seems to demand selection of a printer driver; we can't see
any obvious way of setting up a raw print queue. Apsfilter seems to
allow more options, but nothing that we've tried seems to accept print
jobs from Windows machines.
Having succeeded in this using RedHat 7.3 and printconf-tui, we've also
experimented with transferring the file structure that printconf creates
(/etc/printcap, and the printer definition stuff under /var/spool
including the perl script) to the Debian machine. At that point printing
files directly using the lpr command produces identical (if not very
useful) output from both machines. Copying Windows printer files to the
Debian machine and sending that to the printer using "lpr printfile.prn"
or similar produces good output. So it seems that it is Samba is the
problem at that point. But even using the smb.conf file from the RedHat
machine on the Debian machine (changing Netbios name setting
appropriately) doesn't get it going. File shares are working OK under
Samba - just no printer stuff.
So that leaves two questions:
1. How do we use Debian-based tools to set up the raw print queue
(copying the printconf structure and perl script seems a bit of a dirty
fix), or is there an alternative tool available for Debian?
2. What is causing the problem with Samba?
I guess the other option is to simply RedHat on the server, but our
other production Linux servers are Debian, so we'd prefer to stay with
one distribution.
We'd be very greateful for any help anyone can offer.
