Hi, 
Thank you both for your helpful suggestions.  When I logged back in I scanned the menus again and immediately found the appropriate place to add myself!
Now I have done something silly!
At some point, probably trying to configure network(unsuccessfully!), I've entered an incorrect name.
When I attempt to log on I get the following, and then can't proceed.
"There was an error setting up interprocess communications for KDE.  The message returned by the system was:
Could not read network connection list.
/home/rose/.DCOPserver_http://www.xtra.co.nz_o
Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running.

Any ideas very welcome!  I am not off to a good start with Mandrake!
