use the "hostname" command (as root) to set your hostname to whatever you want.
hostname with no arguments will tell you what it is currently set to. (see man
hostname or info hostname for possibly useful but probably confusing
descriptions of how to use the hostname command :-)
The confusing terminolgy "hostname" applies to your own PC, not a remote host.
A classic gotcha of Linux arcana.
You might also stick an entry in the file /etc/hosts for your system, to set
the hostname you enter. See man hosts for some arcane info on what this file
is.
I have a couple of reasonable books on Linux & Linux administration for
beginners if anyone is interested. They are always a bit behind the current
distros, but still give a useful guide for the sorts of things that often pop
up here.
If WLUG does start up a library, I'm happy to loan these to it for other
members to use. (At $60-$100+ per decent book, it gets expensive if you start
buying them...)
As far as avoiding the warning message on Gnome startup, you could try another
window manager (such as KDE). It won't fix the underlying problem, but at least
doesn't keep telling you about it!
There are heaps of internet resources you can look at to help you learn these
basics,
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue49/misc/beekmans/LFS-HOWTO.html#toc13
is a reasonable starting point. Of course, until you get your local hostname &
internet connection set up correctly under linux, you'll prob need to use
Windows to access the internet :-)
Cheers
