you cannot write to NTFS partitions (well you can but it is considered
experimental i.e. dangerous).

What are you trying to copy from / ?  Normally files in here are
considered wipe-able.   /home is of course the very interesting stuff. 
Is /home in a different partition?  If so, you may be able to simply
format / and start again, while keeping /home unformatted.
